Announcing: The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt Club!

Forever In Stitches' Donna Kidd will be leading the Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt Club at Forever In Stitches. The club will start in February, 2012 and run through January, 2013.

The queen sized quilt [shown above] by Laurie Aaron Hird was inspired by the 1922 Farmer's Wife contest. The Club features 111 traditional farm-themed blocks. The quilt sizes you can create can be multiple throws, two twins, full, queen, or king sized - your choice!

The two lap-twin sized quilts by Donna are shown below. They are on display at Forever In Stitches. Come in and appreciate their beauty. They feature custom quilting with multiple thread colors, and the back also features blocks! Donna really did a great job!

The Club will provide instructions on fabric selection, assembling, paper piecing, binding and finishing the quilt. If you can sew on a line, then you can create this beautiful quilt!

The Club will Include Carol Doak's Foundation Paper with the patterns printed on them! This will make the time in the Club more productive and creative. None the less, all Club members must have a copy of Laurie Aaron Hird's book The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt Book [$27.99], the source of the patterns that we will print on the foundation paper for you.

The cost of the Club is $30 payable each quarter. This includes the printed patterns on Carol Doak's Foundation Paper, as mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I come in to the shop any time we're headed south.  I was just reading about your new club to do the Farmer's Wife Sampler, which I have never seen.  I can't join but I was just wondering--are ALL the blocks in the book done by paper piecing????  - Diane

A: The book uses templates. A disk is provided with the book so that you can print the templates on template material. So, the book does not use paper piecing.

However, when Donna did the quilt(s) she found that the accuracy of templates did not give her the results that she wanted. The individual finished blocks are 6”, not big and not small. She tried using paper piecing and found that it gave her the accuracy that she wanted.

In our shop we have found that the main problem with paper piecing is the perception and, some paper piecing classes are not that good in teaching technique. It is not required that a person knows paper piecing to join the Club. That is why I added the phrase “if you can sew on a line, then you can make this beautiful quilt.”

-------------------------------------

Q: I actually love paper piecing, so I was intrigued that perhaps the whole book was such.  You are right that people are afraid of paper piecing because they aren't taught correctly. - Diane

A: I left out one part. We used the disk to print the templates onto the foundation paper. The layout is actually quite good for paper piecing.

So, in answer to your question, the entire book can be considered to be geared toward paper piecing. - Rick

------------------------------

Q: What do we do in the sessions? - Jerrene

A: The focus of the first session can vary depending upon the needs of the members. We expect it to focus on demonstrations and fabric selection with one block being made / constructed. In the first session a list of all blocks will be handed out to help in fabric planning.

The following sessions will be mostly construction and assistance. - Donna

----------------------

Q: What do we mean by "Fabric Of Your Choice"? - Rick

A: You are free to use your own fabric or fabric from our shop. Different members may have different color requirements and so they are free to choose their own fabric.

The first session will cover choosing the fabric. However, several members have actully had Donna assist them with fabric selection in advance. All members are free to ask Donna for assistance on they days she is in the shop.
